Karukas, Stephen: Elements for Multipercussion Solo
35,00 €
The title ‘Elements’ has several meanings in relation to this piece. In one sense, it refers to the many different materials used in the instrumentation (metal, wood, skin, and optional glass). I have tried to create a piece that highlights both the complementarity of these materials as well as the possibility of sharp contrast between instrument groups.
Elements is also the title of an ancient mathematical treatise by Euclid, which contains instructions for dividing two integers to obtain a quotient and a remainder. Most rhythmic structures in this piece are based on this Euclidean division, particularly the division of the number 13, as it yields small remainders when divided by 3, 4, 5, or 6. This piece presents these rhythms like a kind of ‘broken metronome,’ full of speed changes and jumps caused by these small remainders. The number 13 is also used in larger formal structures as well as in the numerator of time signatures.
